SORN - Statutory Off Road Notification. It means you MUST inform the wonderful DVLA that you intend to take your car off the road and not tax it for a year. If you don't, they have the power to fine you a large amount of money. The result? Still a million untaxed and illegal cars driving the roads every day, proving the fact that those so inclined will always find their way around the system, leaving us law abiding motorists to pick up the bill when we stray even slightly. It really annoys me.

Exactly. Crazy isn't it? I think the intention was to root out those who evade road tax, but the net result has been to penalise those of us who are a little bit forgetful while those who really avoid road tax get off free.

Try telling them you sent the SORN in the post (& tell 'em to shove their bill where the sun don't shine)
Anyone have a 6R4 for sale? Unfortunately I've only got £1K spare but I could throw in a few eggs to sweeten the deal!
