Actually there's a good game - can anyone guess how much I paid for it (not including postage - I'm picking it up) and how much would you pay for one? Just to see if you think I got a good deal or not.

Yes, of course you could cheat. $40NZ Torton? Still, compared to the price of a computer over there then I guess thats about right!

Just come back from picking it up - just as described, excellent bit of kit, plus I got myself some cheap 99 octance fuel from the Tesco in Northampton and had a very enjoyable drive home :D

Yeah they're a fair old whack new - a comparable product these days is several hundred squids

It's definitely a wise investment so that I can check Shelly's running ok on a regular basis - and it takes literally 30 seconds to hook it up :D

I sold a big one of these a while ago on the bay. It was a BEAR. It worked very well and now i wished i hadn't sold it for a steal £100. I did make some profit as i only paid £25 and i used it on lots of cars. I am talking about a garage one for MOT's not the baby versions.

I wish there was a UK version of trademe where chevettes etc. are plentiful and cheap. :? Will you be visiting me to get your car tuned up then Tortron? :P

Come on Ralph get real! He's almost as far away as I am!

My little chevette is all tuned and sweet, but is in winter holiday mode. Keeping out of the nasty weather in a nice dry hay shed. Roll on springtime, but a machine doodah like yours Ralph would come in very handy for twice yearly tune ups.

well i figure if i attatch some 44gal drums and patch up any holes in the floor i will be (like the cubans) able to drive there.

with 33mpg i may need to refill a few times tho, so perhaps il fill the drums with petrol :)

also there is currently 7 chevettes on trademe ranging from a $1 parts car

to a estate

Well mine needs something as i'm only getting 170miles to a full tank of unleaded.

You either have lead diving boots on, or the car is getting seriously over fuelled. I manage about 250 miles on a tank, and often that's only down to about 1/4 full. That's about 40 to the gallon, which I reckon isn't too bad. Having said that, it is only a 35 litre tank, which is what, 8 gallons? So that means yours is doing about 22 mpg. Fantastic stuff. Right up there with a BMW 540i getting a bit of stick.

4.5 litres to a gallon so whatever the tank is. It does need chcking as on idle it sounds like its got a lumpy cam in it, wants checking out but i havent bothered yet. offered a 1.8s engine minus the sump, pickup, dizzy & engine mounts 49,000miles but looking for a complete 1.8s engine after january.

timing out, lack of compression ie blown gasket, bad plugs???

Mine used to drink a bit, though nothing like what yours does, would be giving about 27-28 mpg on a long run with a light foot. Gave her a good tune up on a krypton tuning machine and she was so far out of tune that after that she has sipped petrol. So could that be your problem?

im getting about hmm, 17 mpg.. lead foot, twin carbs.

PostPosted: 03 Jan 2006, 15:37

Does the twin carbs on yours make her much quicker, seeing as effectively we have the same car? I know Neily's car is earth shatteringly fast, but he has a cam in there lumpier than the Pennines (or so he thinks anyway) so it doesn't count. Besides, he drives an bottom clenchingly dull astra estate now. (My astra doesn't count - every journey is an adventure because the brakes don't really work) :D

Compressions fine only 60,000 on the clock it doesnt use any oil or water. It was sitting for 7yrs until i got my hands on it, i havent touched the engine really though only air filter, filter & oil change.

i'll get it checked tomorrow.
