Sudden Power Loss at High Speed

Here's an odd one that I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction as its just started with this fault. It concerns a standard 1.3 from my 'stable of classics'

The car was recently serviced. When running on the motorway (she'll show 95 on the clock) after many miles (20 - 30) the car will start hesitating (the same feeling as when the points are out of adjustment) and will slow itself down to a foot-on-the-floor maximum of 75.

This is accompanied by a distinctive humming/buzzing sound from under the bonnet (it sounds like it's coming from the drivers side but as there's nothing on that side of the engine it can't be). At first I thought the exhaust manifold gasket had blown. This sound is directly linked to the accelerator pedal - i.e. full throttle = loud, 1/2 throttle = 1/2 volume & no throttle = no humming.

After 5 miles it clears but the motor feels slightly hesitant. When cooled it's back to normal.

What the f***?? (that means any ideas?? )

I have the same or very similar thing on mine but only when the engine is under load and heavy throttle. Almost feels like is running out of petrol. Take your foot off a bit and its back to normal??

Exactly!!! :o

Anyhow I've just been fiddling around tonight as it was gradually getting worse. Next thing I look into the distributor and after seperating the points manually (to test the condensor) saw a blue flash which can point to a faulty condensor.

Anyhow there's now not enough spark on the points to start the bloody engine. I reckon the condensor has now fully packed up.

The old Haynes manual states faulty condensor pointers as "missing of engine after several miles running & badly pitted points" - this describes mine to a T.

I'm guessing you haven't done to many miles since your problem started - mine only manifested itself on Tuesday but it's had 2 days commute which is 240miles for me.

Anyhow, I'm hoping a local motor factors can get me a condensor - ANYONE KNOW ANY THAT MAY HELP (OR POSSIBLY THE VX PART NO.)?

Cheers

should be just able to ask the local car bits shop, mine was under a holden/vauxhall/izuzu part (all of the above)

Ah - glad you got it sorted. We were talking about this problem at the weekend and came to the conclusion that you were right in suspecting the condensor.
