battery light help!!!

Postby Guest » 30 Sep 2005, 14:43

when i put the brake on my battery light comes on very faintly too.
the light get brighter if i have lights stereo etc on.
the alternators working ok so what can it be?
my guess is theres a short somewhere in the brake light wires dumping 12v to earth but i can't find anything.
has anyone else had this problem or know what it might be?
cheers for the help

Sounds like the alternator is just about coping. Have you checked the charge voltage? Should be around 13.5 volts.
Check ya fanbelt`s not slipping when alternator`s under load.

Also check for bad earth connections at the light clusters, clean up any that are rusty or `green`, same goes for battery/body earth strap.

The only other brake light problem I`ve come across is `floppy` filiments in the bulbs. When you put the brakes on, the filement lights up & `bends` as it expands...it can touch the side light filement, causing problems.
Try changing the stop/tail bulbs. Failing that, you`ll have to get a meter on the wires. It won`t be a bad short or the brake light fuse would expolde! 8)
