Front wings

Postby TJM » 17 Oct 2007, 15:36

Hi

I have just been discussing the possibility of getting new steel front wings remade for the Chevette, good idea I thought, then I asked just give me a rough estimate of how much they would cost.

£400 + each and I would need to order 20.

Do I have to ask is there any interest at those prices?

I also asked about rear lower quarter panels repair sections and those would be approx £40 to £50 each.

Cheers

Is that made up using the soft style tooling sets Tim, the kind which need a good set of original wings to be sacrificed to make a pattern? I think some of us had been speculating about getting wings made up, but the cost of tooling the whole thing up was ridiculous and suppliers wanted a small fortune per wing or pair of wings, plus a pair of original GM wings to destroy in the process.

If someone could find a way to get a pair of wings remanufactured for under £200 then I think they might be on to something!

I think you might be struggling at £400+ Tim but nice one for trying!

Hadrian ran out years ago, Brother-in-law warks for them at Westbury branch and he can not trace any.

Yes they don't have any and when I asked about getting them remade a couple of years ago they told me the presses had been destroyed in China as that bwas where they were getting them made.

Shame really.

Looks like fibreglass is the best option for the money.

I might be being really thick here but are we talking about the repair section behind the rear arches ? Like in the pic here ?

Only I bought a pair from Hadrians Northumberland branch just last summer. Got a sill and arches off them too. Admittedly the rear lower sections were off a saloon ( hence longer) but the bodyshop just cut them to fit.

I am also talking about the rear lower quarters but if the Saloon versions are still available and can be made to fit then probably not worth looking into these either.

What about rear arches for the 4 door saloons? All the repair panels I've found have been utter rubbish... I know there isn't much demand.

What there may be demand for is the inner arch panels, which I believe are shared with all body styles. Again, all the panels I have come across have been crap, managed to track down a set of NOS inner arches but I think they must have been stored in a washing machine at the bottom of the sea, such was their battered condition.

Expressed Steel Panels have a few panels in stock that they were thinking about getting made but came to the conclusion there would be much demand for them as the prices will be high due to the way they manufacture dies to make them.

So it does look like Hadrian panels and Dr-Manta are going to be the only source for these panels, of course there are fibreglass wings, so if we could get a good original front panel then i would be interested in getting mould of it made (at my own cost) and selling these if there is enough interest.

Lower corners for saloon are available and if fitting an arch section at the same time you lose nothing by cutting them down, in fact better to do so for the flow of the arch edge :D

Loads of stuff is available at less than Dr Manta prices if you know where to look.

I've got Kadett C wings (later type, but can modify), two front valances (early type which is what I wanted) and four sills in the loft just in case.

Where have you tried already for front panels?

Can probably get inner arches and battery trays too.
