Engine Compression

Postby UpNorth » 12 Jan 2007, 19:09

Hi, anyone know what the cylinder compression of a standard engine should be?

I'm going to see a friend TOMORROW MORNING with a Chevy but he reckons its rings are knackered...........I just need to find my compression tester tonight.

Cheers
Anyone have a 6R4 for sale? Unfortunately I've only got £1K spare but I could throw in a few eggs to sweeten the deal!

If it's before engine number 200xxxxx then 9.2:1, otherwise 8.7:1 (total recall without a Haynes :D).

No, he meant compression, not CR.

Not huge. Something like 120 - 140 lb minimums, I think.

The figure of 125psi springs to mind for some reason - although it could equally apply to a BMW 525e. Something in that region I would have thought, as long as all four look reasonable and are within about 10% of each other all should be well.

Good men, thanks all. As it happens I've put the job off until tomorrow as a had a case of weekend fever this morning  Rather odd, it's something that seems to strike me after I've been to the local hostelry the night before :?

Last time I ran a check, they were around 160, IIRC.
