does anyone know how straight forward it is to fit a mk1 cavalier 1600 engine and gearbox into a chevette and wether the back axle is the same setup width etc. cheers

Same applies as to fitting a Manta engine / box / axle. Mk1 cav axle is the same as Manta B, i.e. a bit wide. One benefit of the 1600 axle would be shorter diff, if you needed one. I wouldn't bother with the 1600 though, unless you've a very good reason to - if you're going to do the work you might as well fit a 2 litre - if you used the bits from a scrap GT/E it'd get you a Getrag as well, instead of the Vauxhall 4 speed box.
