Which gearbox oil to use?

Postby iety2004 » 31 Oct 2005, 22:26

I recently change my engine on my Kadett, whilst refitting the gearbox, quite a bit of oil came out of te back and poured on the floor,

so i thought no problem, just buy some more, i looke in the haynes manual and it said to use Castrol Hypoy,

But since then i have looked on Castrols website and it doesn't list it as a product, so im guessing they don't make.

So what gearbox oil should i use instead?

I ain't getting in no plane!

SAE 80EP Gearbox Oil sounds like it could be a good idea :)

I think the proper name is Castrol Hypoid gear oil.

SAE 90EP for the diff, `afore you ask ;)

Aye, get the Castrol EP80 stuff, seems to do the trick for mine.

Hypoy Light's an old Castrol brand name for SAE 80EP.

If you're looking in Haynes for spec, look at the chapters - the bit at the front just wants to sell you stuff!

Any good quality 80EP will do.

GM spec is GM M 15/1
