Carlton gearboxes

Whenever someone wants to put a modern (2.0 8 valve/XE) in a chevette the view is ‘You need a Manta 1.8 gearbox’. My question is, why can’t you use a carlton 1.8/2.0 (D-L reg) gearbox? These are 5 speed and join onto the ‘modern’ Vauxhall sohc 2.0 engine, and are common as muck so whats the problem? Is it because, the carlton having independent rear suspension and a non-moving diff, the box has some sort of funny output flange which does not work with the chevette’s mobile live-axle diff?

i would say you are right but i hav'nt seen one up close but i don't think there would be any problems it could be the ratio's in the box that are no good

Custom prop with the correct flange on each end. Problem sorted. :)

As for ratios....I don't think they'd be too bad.

Actually with the smaller rolling radius of the Shove's wheel/tyre combo, the Carlton box may work to your advantage - nice gearing and the fifth gear being slightly longer, you'd get a decent cruising rate for motorways :)

people say use the manta box because you need to use the sump pan and axle from the manta anyway so the chances are they had a manta donor car. it's a tried and tested method that's documented and works. the main problem with conversions is that you use what is available at the time and when people were converting chevettes the carlton was not available to use. i concur with steve about the gear ratios as the carlton was built for cruising but with a low enough diff ratio you could make use of it.

I reckon the lower gearing from having smaller wheels would make it perfectly usable...

Anyone got ratio details for the Carlton box?

Shovitpusher forgot to log in & said....

quite the opposite, the torque tube axle has the sliding joint at the diff end so if the carlton box has an output flange rather than a push in drive it would be very suitable. since they come with the ohc engine as well as being rwd would it not be a better donar car?

i'm so used to forums that don't let you post as a guest i did indeed forget to log in on my work pc - how the h*ll did you know it was me?

i'm afraid it is very much a try it and see job - same as the person who first used the manta setup.

Im still here, been very busy with my summer job, working for a Rally team so i been busy preparing their WRC Focus for rallys, been to M-Sport as well, and if they can make a Family 1.6 Zetec Focus into a 300 bhp 4wd world rally car then anything is possible if your willing to put the work in.

Sorry tim not as yet i havent, haven't really tried. I bought a Swift GTI Engine tho, the plan is to make up an conversion plate so i can use the FORD TYPE 9 box, seems to be cheaper, readily available and uprated parts can be bought for it.

Run the engine on it standard intake system with fuel injection and ECU.

Just hope i can use the thing to do some road rallys :?

as the rules are written at present you can use the engine as long as it has the standard plenum.

is it a mk1 or mk2 engine? big differance in mounts and dizzy. you'll not need to uprate the box, except to get better ratios - a lower final drive would be a cheaper way to deal with that.

i have 3 alloy cased 5 speed boxes out of an old Mitsubishi if you can arrange collection your welcome to one or 2, i'll have a look in the gargage but i think the starter cutout is on the right side.
