tims conversion - manta GTE exclusive

good news! (for me - bad for my uncle)

My uncle has a 2.0 manta GTE exclusive. He was restoring it but on peeling back the headlining discovered that the roof supports and top of the a and b pillars are rotted to hell.

The upshot? He wants to sell it to me.

Even better my flatmate has a manta that he has done an XE conversion on and wants the panels as spares, so I can go halves with him on it.

I also have somewhere to store it for a while.

So then..... what can I make use of on the GTE exclusive?
- the shocks? are they billies on a GTE exclusive? do they have the turrets or will I still need a set of these?
- sump? is this the bigwing type for the family two conversion?
-engine mounts? - again for the family two conversion?
dizzy and ignition set up? or do i need the stuff off an 1800?

This also gives me a manta B prop end which I can use for my custom propshaft?

Failing this i could just drop the 2L 8V into the chevette......... (but it's a heavy engine is it not?)

I take it then you not going to use that engine?

the parts from the manta engine are no good for the conversion you want. i think the whole manta engine, sump, gearbox ect. should go straight in though. the standard chevette axle should just about be able to cope with the power as well.

the suspension should fit along with the turrets but i dont think the turrets will be a direct fit, they may need some fettling

personally i would fit the gte engine and gearbox with the standard axle. all you would need is a custom prop i think, for which you should have all the parts to make. see how long the axle lasts. i wouldnt bother with the rear axle swap till the standard one packs in(if it does)

im pretty sure the standard axle has a closer ratio diff than the manta axle too

if it's a 2L then it's a cam in head.It will go in as i've seen one but that was done proffesionally, the problem you've got is the inlet and exhaust are on the same side as the steering column, they are a heavey lump but you can pick things like head and cams up quite cheaply, saying that my mates was a 2.2 and went like sh1te off a shiney shovel.

the springs will be to long, but the shox will fit and as tony said leave the axle alone untill it goes pop.I r/rallied a 2.1 pinto in a chevette for years with a std axle with no problems...

iety, i'd keep the SR engine even if i did the 2L conversion as a spare for the nova if things went horribly wrong with it's current one.

I think i shall have a crack at this manta lump conversion, at the end of the day, it will get the car running and me some time behind the wheel on a couple of minor rallies. If I decide to opt for the 1600 later, most of the gear is already fitted.....

Regarding the weigth of the manta engine, I cant see it being any more heavy than a pinto? Even if it doesnt quite pack the punch.

Would also have to source a set of twin 45's and manifold :D

Regarding fettling - does this mean to heat something up and then tw*t it with a hammer?

A BIT HEAVIER THAN A PINTO BUT IT'LL BE QUICK TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THAT THE CHEVETTE IS A LOT LIGHTER THAN A MANTA.sorry about that the caps lock was on......

heavier than a pinto!? sweet jesus that is heavy.

still, i've got to do something with the chevette!

Was it iety who had access to a flowmeter? could you build me custom manifolds to account for the awkward shape of the block?

If theres any thing left of the manta when you have finished i may be intrested in purchasing some or all of whats left (am currently rebuilding a manta gte and need some, well a lot of stuff including some body parts i would have to cut off but would take the whole shell if needs be) :D let us know cheers.

i would be intrested in the front seats and subframes or just the subframes if they are the gte recaro type. ive got a couple of recaro seats here ive cleaned up but i dont have subframes to fit them in my manta

i'm afraid the seatsubframes are one of the things my flatmate is after out of it so he can have sliders on the bucket seats in his manta
